Timestamps and measurements alone do not explain production. Equipment state, product and signal definitions make data useful for analysis.

Define signals clearly

Record each relevant signal’s name, units, range and source. A name such as “Value_1” offers little guidance later. Document changes to scaling or assignment.

Associate events with measurements

Link measurements to states such as production, setup and fault. Check time alignment between systems. Without this context, readings from different phases may be evaluated together incorrectly.

Start with a specific question

Choose a question first, such as which interruption causes the greatest loss of production time. This determines required signals and periods. Data collection remains manageable and serves a clear purpose.
