A clear list of downtime causes supports production and maintenance. Too many categories, or ambiguous ones, make later analysis harder.
Use operationally meaningful categories
Distinguish technical faults, material shortages, setup and organisational waiting. Categories should be understandable and practical for operators. A free-text note can capture exceptions without endlessly expanding the list.
Distinguish duration from frequency
A short recurring stop may cost more time overall than one major breakdown. Review both measures. Records should show whether several entries belong to the same event.
Review recording practices regularly
Compare examples from different shifts and correct inconsistent assignments. Use the data collaboratively to identify causes. Consistent recording is necessary before improvement priorities can be established.
